Television Review: Sex... With Mom And Dad
Most families have discussions about different topics throughout the day. Whether you’re at the dinner table, sitting on the couch or driving home from school, there’s a wide range of subjects for any location. Well, there was until the word sex popped up too often.
Sex. One word. One way to a conversation’s destruction. One mention of the subject sends some parents into outrages, leading their kids to find out the dangers of sex in the real world. Fortunately, MTV is here to save the day.
Sex…With Mom and Dad starts off with a summary of the problems the featured family has while trying to discuss sex. Two activities follow to try and let the family members talk about their knowledge and experiences with sex.
Usually, the activities reveal secrets about the teens that they’ve been withholding from their parents, such as how many times they’ve had sex or if they’ve purposely tried to get pregnant. In other episodes, the activities reveal secrets about the parents, like if they’ve ever had an STD or if they were pressured into their first time.
The program, conducted by Dr. Drew Pinsky, not only opens up conversations about sex between parents and their children, but it also helps the teens feel more comfortable while talking to their parents about embarrassing subjects and lets them hear their parents’ real advice instead of their commands.
To me, the show is pretty ground-breaking. Even just a few years ago, you’d have a hard time trying to find a show that is as mature and out-spoken as Sex…With Mom and Dad is.
Many teenagers today cannot talk about things such as sex and drugs with their parents. Sure, there is almost always “the talk” and I’m sure there is the occasional “don’t do drugs”, but teens do not want to hear things they’re expecting to hear. That is why the show emphasizes doing the strange activities. Being able to relate to the kids is different than just warning them of the consequences of the day after.
Sex…With Mom and Dad is likely to get flamed by the legions of mothers in groups that try to shield their children away from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, it’s parents like that who have kids that go wild when they leave the house. The show is for those people.
MTV doesn’t usually have quality shows, or shows that have any important meanings behind them. Sure, I watch many of the shows on MTV, but only because they’re so horrible in nature. Sex…With Mom and Dad is not only entertaining, but also informative and horrifying.
Episodes of Sex… With Mom And Dad air weekly on MTV.
